Election 2024: Mahama Positions Himself as ‘Retired Army General’ Ready to Rescue Ghana

John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has likened his political comeback to that of a “retired army general” called back to active duty. Speaking on Monday, December 2, 2024, to district and municipal Imams in the Ashanti Region during a six-day campaign tour, Mahama emphasized his readiness to lead Ghana through its current economic and governance challenges.

In his address, Mahama highlighted the importance of sound policy-making as essential for restoring stability and improving the lives of citizens. Drawing a parallel to a military leader brought back to service during tough times, he said, “If we go to war, and we encounter difficulties, we go back to call the retired general to come back and lead us. This is a clear illustration of myself because I am a retired general and I went to rest, but it is time to come back for we are in a difficult period, so my party has nominated me to lead the party. I know that many of you pray for us and give us guidelines to follow. I thank every one of you for your prayers.”

In addition to addressing economic and governance issues, Mahama promised to enact legislation to recognize and legitimize Islamic marriage within the country’s constitution. This pledge was made in response to discussions with the Chief Imam, who has called for such a measure. “There are a lot of things that we intend to do. Chief Imam has said that a law that legitimizes Islamic marriage must be enacted, so we have decided to do that,” Mahama stated.

Mahama’s campaign is seeking to portray him as a seasoned leader capable of guiding the nation through its current difficulties, positioning himself as the solution to what he describes as a period marked by mismanagement and inefficiency.
