Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on the Electoral Commission (EC), political parties, and key national stakeholders to prioritize Ghana’s democratic integrity and ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process as the December 7 polls approach.
In a statement issued on December 3, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe urged the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, to uphold the institution’s longstanding legacy of transparency, fairness, and impartiality. He emphasized that the Commission’s credibility is essential to sustaining public confidence in the democratic process.
“You are not the first to hold this esteemed office, and you will not be the last. The legacy of this institution has always been one of fairness, transparency, and impartiality,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said.
Appeal to Leadership and Institutions
The veteran politician called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to ensure that state institutions, including the EC, function without bias and act in ways that reflect a commitment to peace and national unity. He cited the successful elections of 2016 and 2020 as benchmarks for Ghana’s democratic progress and urged the president to preserve this standard.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also addressed the clergy, traditional leaders, and members of the Council of State, encouraging them to take active roles in promoting peace and accountability during the electoral period. He criticized their tendency to remain silent in times of national tension and urged them to rise above political affiliations to safeguard the country’s stability.
Call for Citizen Vigilance
In his message to the Ghanaian people, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe highlighted the importance of citizen vigilance in holding institutions accountable. He encouraged voters to prioritize national interests over partisan loyalties and to demand fairness and integrity from all actors involved in the electoral process.
“To my fellow Ghanaians, I urge you to stay vigilant. Let us not allow partisan loyalties to blind us to the dangers we face. This is a time to prioritize the future of Ghana above all else. Our collective voice must call for peace, fairness, and accountability from every institution,” he stated.
Upholding Ghana’s Democratic Reputation
With Ghana widely regarded as a beacon of democracy in Africa, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s call underscores the need for all stakeholders to act responsibly and ensure the elections reflect the country’s commitment to democratic principles. The December 7 polls are expected to be closely contested, adding to the importance of maintaining a peaceful and credible electoral process.
His appeal resonates as a reminder of the collective effort required to uphold Ghana’s reputation for free, fair, and peaceful elections.
