OSP Investigates Food Distribution Incident in Ayawaso West Wuogon Special Voting

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has commenced an investigation into the food distribution incident involving Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, during the special voting exercise. The incident, which took place at the Legon Police Station polling center on December 2, 2024, has stirred public debate and accusations of electoral misconduct.

Allegations of Electoral Rule Violation

The investigation follows a video showing Alhassan, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, distributing food packs to voters in queues with the help of her team. Critics, including her political rival John Dumelo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have labeled the act as a breach of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) regulations and an attempt to influence voters.

Dumelo condemned the gesture, calling it illegal and unfair. He argued that such actions undermine the integrity of the voting process and suggested that if he chose to, he could replicate similar actions on a larger scale.

OSP’s Intervention

OSP officials confirmed to the media that the investigation was launched after complaints were filed regarding the potential violation of electoral laws. The office is tasked with ensuring transparency and accountability in such cases, particularly in the lead-up to the December 7 general elections.

Lydia Alhassan’s Defense

In response to the controversy, Hon. Lydia defended her actions, stating that the food distribution was a compassionate gesture in response to requests from voters who appeared tired or hungry. She emphasized that her intention was not to sway voters but to address immediate needs. Alhassan also clarified that the food packs were initially intended for her polling agents and the media personnel present.

Implications

The investigation by the OSP highlights the heightened scrutiny surrounding electoral activities as Ghanaians prepare for a closely contested election. While the outcome of the probe is yet to be determined, the incident has raised broader questions about voter influence, ethics, and adherence to electoral guidelines.

The OSP’s findings will play a crucial role in determining whether any breaches occurred and could set a precedent for handling similar incidents in future elections.
