he Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Samuel Pyne, has dismissed claims that the New Kejetia Market will be shut down on Saturday, December 7, to compel traders to participate in the general elections. The allegations, reportedly made by some discontented traders, suggested that the closure was directed by the Mayor at the request of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, following a meeting with queen mothers in Kumasi.

Speaking to Channel One News, Mayor Sam Pyne labeled the claims as false and baseless, affirming that no such directive had been issued. “Regarding the New Kejetia Market, the Assembly, Regional Security Council (REGSEC), and Municipal Security Council have not taken any decision to close down that facility because of elections,” he stated.

The Mayor also accused elements within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of spreading the misinformation, suggesting it was part of a strategy to create tension and disrupt activities at the market on election day.

“It was one National Democratic Congress (NDC) surrogate who wrote a false letter just to distract attention. Some of these things need to be reported to the police because it causes fear and panic. I will officially report the matter to the regional police command for action to be taken,” Mayor Pyne added.

He assured traders and the general public that authorities are committed to maintaining peace and security during the elections. “REGSEC, the Municipal Security Council, and the Assembly have met and taken a decision to protect all installations within the region during the elections. We have not taken any decision to close down any of the markets within the Kumasi metropolis and across the region on election day,” the Mayor emphasized.

The KMA and local security councils have pledged to safeguard critical infrastructure, including markets, to ensure smooth operations and a peaceful electoral process. Mayor Pyne encouraged traders to disregard the rumors and go about their activities without fear.
