As Ghana prepares for the December 7 general elections, the National Peace Council (NPC) has identified nine constituencies in the Central Region as potential hotspots for electoral unrest. Among these, the Awutu Senya-East Constituency (Kasoa) emerges as a focal point, with a staggering 42 flashpoints flagged for close monitoring.

Identified Hotspots
The nine constituencies singled out include:

  1. Awutu-Senya-East
  2. Effutu
  3. Agona-West
  4. Assin-North
  5. Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese
  6. Cape Coast-North
  7. Twifo-Hemang-Lower-Denkyira
  8. Upper-Denkyira-West
  9. Upper-Denkyira-East

The Right Reverend Richardson Aboagye Andam, Chairman of the Regional Peace Council, shared these findings during the Ghana First Youth Symposium at the University of Cape Coast. Organized by Youth Vision International with support from the Peace Council, the symposium focused on fostering peace and youth empowerment under the theme “Putting Ghana First.”

Measures to Ensure Peace
The NPC has engaged stakeholders across these areas to mitigate risks of violence before, during, and after the elections. Security agencies have intensified monitoring in these constituencies, with proactive strategies to address any potential disturbances swiftly.

The NPC emphasized the critical role of the youth in maintaining peace, urging tolerance, respect for divergent views, and a commitment to social cohesion. Citizens were cautioned against the practice of vote buying and selling, described as a corrosive element to Ghana’s democratic values.

Call to Action
Madam Araba Aikins, Assistant Director at the Cape Coast Metro Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), urged political youth activists to abide by electoral regulations and act responsibly. She highlighted the dangers of being manipulated by politicians for personal or partisan gains.

Similarly, Mr. Richard Ohene-Kwashie of Youth Vision International reinforced the organization’s commitment to empowering the youth to prioritize national stability over political ambitions. He emphasized the irreplaceable value of peace, underscoring its importance for Ghana’s continued development.

As the election date approaches, the NPC and its partners are resolute in their efforts to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process, urging all citizens to place the nation’s welfare above all else.
