Election 2024: President Akufo-Addo Calls for Unity to Protect Ghana’s Democracy

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to safeguard the nation’s standing as a democratic leader in Africa as the country heads to the polls on December 7, 2024. In a poignant final address on December 6, the President underscored the significance of maintaining Ghana’s reputation for democratic stability and peaceful elections.

Ghana: A Beacon of Democratic Stability

“We should never forget that the flame of freedom needs to be protected and constantly refueled. Elections are at the heart of democracy, and we qualify to be counted among mature democracies after eight successful elections,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He added, “It is not surprising that our country is held up as a beacon of democratic stability in Africa. We should be justly proud of this and do everything we can to protect and uphold this status.”

A Defining Election

The 2024 election, the ninth under Ghana’s Fourth Republic, represents a pivotal juncture in the country’s political journey. The presidential race features Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The stakes are higher than ever, with the election taking place amid economic challenges, including post-pandemic recovery, inflation, unemployment, and mounting public debt.

Contrasting Campaign Agendas

The NPP is campaigning on its achievements in digitalization, economic reforms, and infrastructure development, while the NDC emphasizes job creation, reducing socioeconomic disparities, and rebuilding infrastructure.

In addition to the presidency, both parties are vying for control of the 275 parliamentary seats, making the outcome critical for shaping Ghana’s future policies.

A Call for Peace and Participation

President Akufo-Addo reminded citizens of their role in ensuring a peaceful electoral process, urging them to exercise their civic rights responsibly.

“This election is not just about choosing leaders but about reaffirming our commitment to democratic values. Let us demonstrate to the world that Ghana remains the shining star of African democracy,” he concluded.

As Ghana approaches this landmark election, the call for unity and the preservation of democratic integrity resonates strongly, with the hope that the process will further cement the nation’s standing as a model of peaceful and credible elections on the continent.
