Chaos at Ayawaso West Wuogon as EC official transports ballot papers with unregistered vehicle

Tension flared in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in the Greater Accra Region after the close of the December 7 polls, with residents raising concerns about the handling of election materials.

Reports reaching onlinetimesgh.com indicate that after counting was concluded in all the polling stations, with ballot papers transferred to the coalition centre, one polling station had issues with the presiding officer.

It said the presiding officer refused to place the Biometric Verification Device (BVD) in the ballot box and seal it for transport to the collation centre, as is standard procedure.

The situation escalated when the Ghana Police Service intervened, instructing the presiding officer to comply.

However, the officer persisted in his refusal. Matters worsened when the presiding officer was forced to place the ballot box in a vehicle to be transported. Residents discovered the vehicle to be unregistered, sparking further outrage.

The residents, citing concerns over the unregistered status of the vehicle, refused to allow it to transport the ballot box to the collation centre.

But the police have since intervened, secured, and transported the ballot box themselves.
