Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader, has assured Ghanaians that the upcoming parliamentary session on December 16 will be peaceful and orderly. This comes after a recent court ruling that affirmed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Majority in Parliament, putting to rest any doubts regarding the composition of the House.
Afenyo-Markin explained that the court ruling had resolved the issue of the Majority and Minority, clarifying that the NPP holds the Majority seat in Parliament, as the Speaker of Parliament’s earlier pronouncement had been disputed by the party.
The Speaker, Alban Bagbin, has directed that the session take place at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), which Afenyo-Markin described as a neutral and appropriate venue.
He emphasized that the matter is now settled, citing the court’s interpretation of the constitution regarding independent candidates, which reaffirmed their standing in Parliament. With the controversy behind them, Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence that Parliament will reconvene smoothly, with no further disruption expected.
The NPP, according to Afenyo-Markin, remains the Majority in Parliament, and the House will continue its work as it heads toward its expiration on January 6, 2025.
