Mahama Pledges to Probe Election-Related Deaths

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has vowed to investigate the tragic election-related deaths reported during the 2024 general elections if the outgoing administration does not act. His comments follow reports of at least three fatalities and multiple injuries stemming from election-related violence in certain regions.

During a courtesy visit by the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly, Mahama expressed his commitment to ensuring justice for the victims. “I am happy about the smooth and successful election we had. Unfortunately, there were a few incidents which led to deaths. I intend to investigate what led to these deaths. People are culpable, and they need to pay the price for what they have done,” Mahama stated.

Call for Immediate Action

Mahama urged the outgoing government to address the incidents swiftly, adding, “I hope this government investigates those incidents, but if they don’t, we will do it when we come to office.”

Strengthening Ghana-EU Relations

The President-elect also emphasized his administration’s dedication to enhancing Ghana’s bilateral relations with the European Union. Highlighting the significance of EU investments in Ghana’s economy, Mahama said, “A lot of foreign investment that comes to our country comes from the EU, and we want to deepen that, especially in this economic crisis, where we are shut out from the international capital market.”

He further noted plans to engage with the EU early in his administration to align cooperation agreements with Ghana’s development agenda.

EU Commendation for Historic Appointment

Ambassador Razaaly congratulated Mahama on his electoral victory and praised the historic appointment of the first female Vice President-elect, describing it as a landmark achievement for Ghana.

“Congratulations to you and your running mate for being the first female to hold this position as a vice president. We need to acknowledge this move and the conduct of the election,” Razaaly remarked.

Election Results

The Electoral Commission officially declared Mahama the winner of the 2024 presidential race, securing 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) against his main contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

Mahama’s commitment to justice and diplomatic cooperation sets the tone for his administration as he prepares to assume office amidst heightened public expectations.
