The 2024 national elections have been marred by an alarming level of violence and unrest, raising serious concerns about the future of Ghana’s democratic processes. Reports of gunfire, beatings, assaults, property destruction, and protracted disputes paint a troubling picture of an election season that deviated significantly from the peaceful and orderly exercise promised by authorities responsible for elections and security.
A Dangerous Precedent
The escalating violence during this election cycle risks normalizing a dangerous precedent where voters feel compelled to “defend their votes” through extreme measures, including risking their lives. This trend could lead to widespread insecurity at polling stations and collation centers in future elections, undermining public trust and endangering Ghana’s democratic stability.
Failures of Enforcement and Accountability
The inaction of those empowered to maintain order and enforce the law has exacerbated the crisis. Election officials, political party representatives, polling agents, and candidates have been left vulnerable, with their safety and property jeopardized due to inadequate protection and a lack of swift intervention by law enforcement agencies.
A Call for Systemic Examination and Reform
The election procedures and processes of 2024 have faced unprecedented scrutiny and challenges at various stages. To prevent a recurrence of this chaos, a comprehensive review of the electoral system is urgently needed. Key recommendations include:
- Independent Review: Establishing an independent commission to examine the lapses and irregularities in the 2024 elections, focusing on security lapses, procedural inconsistencies, and stakeholder conduct.
- Public Education: Findings from the review must be communicated transparently to the public, coupled with robust civic education programs to restore confidence in the electoral process.
- Enhanced Security: Revising protocols to ensure the safety of voters, election officials, and political actors, particularly at polling stations and collation centers.
- Accountability: Holding accountable those responsible for inciting or perpetuating election-related violence, irrespective of political affiliation.
Moving Forward
Ghana’s democratic gains have been hard-won, and the bloodshed and violence surrounding the 2024 elections threaten to erode these achievements. Urgent action is required to address the root causes of electoral violence, strengthen institutional accountability, and restore public confidence in democratic processes.
