Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science professor at the University of Ghana, has called for the removal of all current executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of being manipulated by President Nana Akufo-Addo. According to Gyampo, the current leadership has allowed itself to be controlled by the President, which he believes has led to a weakening of the party.

In an appearance on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, December 14, Gyampo urged the party’s “owners” to step in and rescue the NPP from what he described as the “claws of Akufo-Addo and the entire executive of the party.” He warned that unless immediate action is taken to remove the current leadership, the NPP faces the risk of disintegration, which could leave the country without a strong opposition party to hold the government accountable.

“Let me call on the owners of the NPP to rescue the party from the claws of Akufo-Addo and the entire executive of the party. They have to stop the imminent disintegration of the party because we need a strong opposition to keep the government on its toes,” Gyampo stated.

He also emphasized the need for the NPP to restore its traditions and strengthen its leadership to avoid further erosion of its support.

Prempeh Reflects on NPP’s Loss in 2024 Elections

Meanwhile, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to NPP’s flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections, expressed his disappointment over the party’s defeat in the December 7 elections. Prempeh acknowledged the need for the party to reflect on the loss and to determine the factors behind the outcome in order to improve in future elections.

“I have had extensive discussions with our flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to reflect on the outcome of the elections and, in good time, we shall reflect further as a political party on the causes of our 2024 election loss,” Dr. Prempeh noted.

Despite the loss, Prempeh remained optimistic about the NPP’s future, stressing that the party would reflect on the reasons behind the result and work toward regaining the trust and support of Ghanaians. He expressed confidence that the NPP would “emerge stronger” in the future.

Prempeh further acknowledged the outcome of the elections, noting that while it was not the result the NPP had expected, the party respected the verdict of the Ghanaian people. In a statement released on December 11, 2024, Prempeh conveyed humility and gratitude for the support received during the elections.

“The 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections resulted in a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC). This was not the outcome we, in the NPP, envisaged; but we respect the verdict of the Ghanaian people. To Ghanaians, we have heard you clearly and with humility we accept. We will work with you to get it right,” he said.

Prempeh also expressed gratitude to the NPP supporters and to Dr. Bawumia for the honor of being selected as his running mate during the elections.
