The Osino District Court in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region has granted bail to 15 supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) accused of setting the Electoral Commission (EC) office at Asuboi ablaze.
The incident, which occurred on December 10, 2024, followed protests by a group identified as the Ayensuano Concerned Youth after the declaration of Ida Adwoa Asiedu as the MP-elect for the Ayensuano Constituency.
Court Proceedings and Bail Conditions
The accused were each granted bail of GH₵20,000 with one surety, despite objections from the prosecution. They are expected to reappear in court on January 14, 2025.
His Worship Salifu Bugri Ayagiba, who presided over the case, upheld the defence counsel’s plea that the accused were well-known within the community and would not evade legal processes.
Prosecution’s Argument
Prosecuting Detective Chief Inspector Kamal Salifu Gumah opposed the bail, citing ongoing investigations and concerns that the accused might interfere with the process.
Defence Response
The defence counsel assured the court that his clients would cooperate fully. He further emphasized that the allegations remained unproven, stating:
“These are all accusations, so the evidence is the only thing that shows they did what they are being accused of. Until then, it is just a mere accusation. If the police can gather evidence, fine; if not, the case will be rubbished.”
Bail Conditions
In addition to the bail, the court instructed the accused to report to the Kibi Police Commander regularly to ensure their availability for further proceedings.
The next court hearing is set for January 14, 2025, where further evidence is expected to be presented.
