Joshua Alabi, the Campaign Manager for the John Mahama Campaign Team, has described the 2024 general election as a “democratic revolution” against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Professor Alabi emphasized that the electorate’s discontent with the government’s performance manifested through their voting choices.
A Revolutionary Spirit Through Democracy
Professor Alabi highlighted the unique nature of the election outcome:
“When the people decide to remove you, nothing can stop it. And going around the country, it was obvious, and that is what I call the people’s democratic revolution. Normally, revolutions go differently, but this time, they are doing a revolution democratically, using the power of the thumb.”
Signs of Acceptance for NDC
He noted a shift in support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in areas where the party had previously faced rejection:
- In certain regions, NDC supporters wore party t-shirts proudly.
- Mahama’s campaign stops attracted massive turnouts, with people eagerly waiting, even into the early hours of the morning.
- Chiefs and community members expressed excitement and welcomed the campaign team warmly.
“A place that we should have been at 6:00 PM, 2:00 AM we are there and the chiefs and people are waiting in their numbers… We’re happy you have come.”
Mahama’s Victory and Parliamentary Gains
The Electoral Commission (EC) declared John Dramani Mahama as the winner on December 9, confirming his victory with:
- 6,328,397 votes (56.55% of valid votes cast).
- His opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, secured 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
The NDC’s success extended beyond the presidency:
- The party secured a majority in Parliament, winning over 180 seats, including constituencies traditionally held by the ruling NPP.
- This achievement further solidifies Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to assume leadership once again.
Professor Alabi underscored that the election outcome reflected a democratic uprising driven by the people’s desire for change. He celebrated the NDC’s widespread acceptance and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to addressing the pressing challenges faced by Ghanaians.
