Kofi Bentil Defends IGP Dampare Amid Calls for Dismissal

Kofi Bentil, Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, has urged critics calling for the removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to desist from their actions.

In a strongly worded Facebook post on December 20, 2024, Bentil highlighted the crucial role the IGP played during the 2024 general elections, crediting him with maintaining peace and stability in a period of heightened political tension. He described calls for Dampare’s dismissal as misguided and counterproductive.

Bentil praised the IGP’s leadership, stating:

“He has done his job for God and Country. And Ghana is better for it. His honest work has led to a tense election settling very quickly. Things would have been far worse if he had not stamped his feet. And he did all of this without the Police firing any shot!”

He further condemned any attempts to undermine the police force and its leadership, warning of severe consequences for efforts to destabilize national safety and security.

Bentil also pointed to a pending Supreme Court case that seeks to prevent the politicization of appointments to security leadership positions. He argued that attempting to dismiss Dr. Dampare while the matter is under judicial review would constitute contempt of court and could render any such action unlawful.

“Any such removal can and should be reversed!!! As unlawful and unaware!!!”

The IMANI Africa executive called on Ghanaians to support the police service and its leadership, emphasizing that national security should take precedence over partisan interests.
