ACUP holds a Pan-African end of year gathering

On Saturday, 21st December 2024, the African Continental Unity Party (ACUP) held its Pan-African End-of-Year Gathering, bringing together delegates from various Pan-African organizations within Ghana. This annual event provided a platform for discussing Africa’s future, reflecting on the challenges of 2024, and strategizing for the coming year 2025.

Among the delegates were key individuals from various Pan-African organizations, including the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the Progressive Alliance for Ghana (PAG), the Economic Fighters League (EFL), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Africans Rising, the PLO Foundation (Ghana Chapter), the Round Table Dialogue for Rescue Ghana Mission, Pan-Africanism in South Dayi, and the Pan-African Unity Party.

Different delegates congratulated the ACUP leadership, including the Interim Secretary of the ACUP, Kwadwo Yeboah, who commended the various departments of the organization for their work. Mr. Ebenezer Agyemang, the leader of the Mass Mobilization Department, organizer of the monthly “Walk and Talk” Positive Action Movement, and a student at the University of Ghana, was highlighted for his tenacity and consistency.

Mr. Kofi Nani Explo, a veteran of the Pan-African struggle since the presidency of Jerry John Rawlings, highlighted the importance of recognizing those who came before us, with special emphasis on the contributions of women.

Auntie Naa, a very active figure in the demonstrations against water pollution in Ghana caused by illegal mining, emphasized the importance of women in the struggle. She encouraged women, as shapers of society, to not only raise their children as potential African Presidents who are Pan-Africanist but also to actively participate in the Pan-African struggle themselves.

Mr. Addai-Sebo spoke of his generation of people, who currently govern the continent, and said they should not be forgiven for messing up Ghana and Africa. After enjoying the benefits of free education from the independence generation, they have destroyed the lives of the up-and-coming youth. He charged the youth to ask tough questions and to hold accountable those who have connived with foreign colonial forces to destroy the African continent.

Kwame Gonza, the Rotating Global Chairperson of ACUP, emphasized the critical mission facing Africa today: the reclamation of African sovereignty and the continent’s rapid reconstruction. Gonza critiqued current African leadership, arguing that it has failed to fully grasp the urgency of this mission. He highlighted the underwhelming achievements of leaders such as President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, and the leadership in South Africa, insisting that their efforts have not sufficiently addressed Africa’s deeper systemic issues.

Gonza drew parallels between modern struggles and significant historical events like the 1791-1805 Haitian revolution and the 1945 Manchester Pan-African Congress, which led to the independence movement in Africa and the Civil Rights Bill of 1964 in the United States. He invoked these moments to stress the importance of reclaiming Africa from both external exploitation and internal collaborators. One of ACUP’s important tasks, Gonza declared, is to foster revolutionary thinking that transcends the complacency seen in today’s leadership.

He pointed to recent data from the 2024 Africa Economic Outlook by the African Development Bank (AfDB), which showed that Africa is losing 17% of its GDP every year to foreign exploitation, which the bank calls “leakages.” For a continent growing at 3.8% annually, losing 17% annually is a clear case of moving backward.

The gathering also featured workshops and discussions on African unity, economic independence, sustainable development, and the need for stronger intra-continental cooperation. Delegates expressed renewed determination to focus on Africa’s self-sufficiency, emphasizing the need to remove neo-colonial influences and continue to prioritize the building of local capacity in key base infrastructures such as a continental railway platform, communication networks, and 120,000 MW of new energy platforms across the continent, without forgetting food sufficiency and sovereignty.

In a critical call to action, the gathering urged all Pan-African progressive governments to follow up on the resolutions of the 4th All-African People’s Conference, held in 1962 in Cairo. This historic conference resolved to mobilize all of Africa against neocolonialism and its stooges on the continent, and to develop a comprehensive continental roadmap to an African revolution. The delegates emphasized that without this unified revolutionary agenda, Africa’s struggle for full liberation would remain incomplete.

ACUP reaffirmed its commitment to continue organizing with revolutionary forces across the continent, with plans to expand the organization’s outreach and strengthen alliances with Pan-Africanist organizations. The end-of-year gathering concluded with a call for unified action, signaling that 2025 will be a crucial year to work together with all progressive forces in charting a new path for a foreign-exploited continent.

The Event was widely covered by Ghana’s Media Platforms.
