The People’s National Party (PNP) has lauded outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his instrumental role in advancing gender inclusivity during his administration.
In a press release, Janet Asana Nabla, PNP Chairperson, commends the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into law, a move she describs as a landmark legislation in Ghana’s pursuit of gender equality.
“This critical legislation has paved the way for more women to participate in politics and national decision-making, and for this, we celebrate your vision and the efforts of Parliament,” Nabla stated .
While reflecting on President Akufo-Addo’s legacy following his final State of the Nation Address, the PNP also acknowledged other key policies, including the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.
“Foremost among your policies is the introduction of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program. This transformative policy not only provided an opportunity for all pupils to access secondary education but also eliminated the inequities of the selective senior high school system. This initiative, a first of its kind since the inception of our democracy, has undoubtedly marked a milestone in our educational system and deserves commendation”
Despite these achievements, the PNP cited some challenges that defined the President’s tenure, including economic hardships and the high cost of living. They attributed some of these difficulties to global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, while urging both the government and the opposition to share responsibility for not providing alternative solutions.
As President Akufo-Addo transitions from active politics, the PNP proposed a constitutional amendment to enable former Presidents and Vice Presidents to serve on the Council of State.
“Their wealth of experience and insights can contribute significantly to the growth and development of our nation,” Nabla said.
Furthermore, the PNP expressed gratitude for Akufo-Addo’s service, urging him to take on the role of a unifying father figure for all political parties.
“As you transition from active politics, we pray for the Lord’s guidance and blessings upon you. We hope you will embrace your new role as a father figure for all political parties, fostering unity and progress for the nation”.
