Employees of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) Bungalows at Osu Kuku Hill have successfully resisted attempts by a private developer to demolish the staff and management residences.

The employees united in a collective effort to protect these historical buildings, raising concerns about the potential loss of cultural heritage and the negative impact on the preservation of Ghana’s national history.

Their stance highlights the importance of these bungalows, which are not only staff accommodations but also integral to the country’s historical legacy.

The developer, currently on-site with heavy machinery, is accused of intending to demolish the structures to make way for modern high-rise apartments.

This development has caused significant alarm within the community, particularly among the long-standing residents of the bungalows, who are deeply concerned about the potential destruction of these heritage sites.

Malik Mahmoud Saako, the Director responsible for the museums, stated in an interview with CitiNews that he holds the NADMO and the Municipal Assembly accountable for allegedly aiding the private developer in this unlawful demolition attempt.

He emphasized that the property is entirely owned by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.

“The property has been entirely financed by the state, yet the private developer is asserting ownership. The matter is currently under judicial review, and no ruling has been issued that would authorize the demolition of the bungalows.

“The National Disaster Management Organization and the municipal assembly are complicit in this unlawful action by the private developer.”
