The Methodist Church Ghana has officially launched its 190th-anniversary celebration, marking nearly two centuries of service to God and the nation. Under the theme “Discipleship: Growing into Christian Maturity,” the year-long celebration will honour the Church’s history, achievements, and contributions to Christianity in Ghana and beyond.

“ I, the Most Rev. Prof. Johnson K. Asamoah-Gyadu, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, on behalf of the Conference, declare the 190th Anniversary Celebrations of the Methodist Church Ghana, duly launched in the name of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  May God’s name be praised; may his glory be revealed; may his works be acknowledged; and may his Kingdom descend upon his people, our nation, and the world.  Thy Kingdom Come. A happy and blessed 190th Anniversary celebrations to all Methodists and may you all be blessed.  Amen!”

In his speech, the Presiding Bishop added that the Church’s motto, “Thy Kingdom Come,” will serve as an anchor theme for the celebrations, which include worship and prayer services, singing festivals, processions, and other activities designed to proclaim Jesus Christ, win souls, and showcase the Methodist faith. The theme song for the occasion is a reworking of the hymn from the Church’s 150th anniversary, now adapted for this historic milestone.

The Presiding Bishop reflected on the Church’s rich legacy and paid tribute to the missionaries and local Christians who laboured to spread the Gospel.

“We celebrate the Patriarchs and Matriarchs of Methodism, that is, all the men and women—beginning with our foreign missionaries—who responded to the call of God and at great risk to their lives made the perilous journeys by sea to the then Gold Coast to sow the seeds of the Gospel of Jesus Christ among us” he stated.

As part of the celebrations, the Church seeks to rekindle its commitment to making disciples and fostering Christian maturity, grounded in the scripture: “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom…” (Colossians 3:16).

Most Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu furthermore dedicated the celebrations to God’s glory, stating, “May God’s name be praised; may his glory be revealed; may his works be acknowledged; and may his Kingdom descend upon his people, our nation, and the world. Thy Kingdom Come.”
