8th Parliament Set to Be Dissolved Today

Ghana’s 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will officially be dissolved today, January 6, 2025, making way for the inauguration of the 9th Parliament. This event marks the conclusion of a legislative term that began on January 7, 2021.

The dissolution process will occur during a final sitting presided over by the Speaker of Parliament, the Right Honourable Alban Bagbin. In this session, Members of Parliament are expected to wrap up any remaining legislative business and bid farewell to the chamber as their term comes to an end.

The 8th Parliament has been one of the most closely contested in Ghana’s history. At its inception, both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) held 137 seats each, alongside one Independent Member of Parliament. This unprecedented balance frequently resulted in intense debates and rigorous negotiations on key legislative matters.

At midnight, the newly elected Members of Parliament will be sworn in, marking the start of the 9th Parliament. The session will also include the election of a new Speaker of Parliament or the potential re-election of the current Speaker.

As the 9th Parliament begins, it is expected to address significant national issues such as economic recovery, healthcare reforms, and disputes related to the recent general elections.

Ghanaians are watching closely as the new legislative body prepares to take on its mandate and navigate the challenges ahead in the years to come.
