President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, invoking Article 72 (1) of the Constitution, has pardoned nine convicted individuals, citing humanitarian concerns. The announcement, made on December 31, 2024, highlights the release of individuals who have shown good conduct or face critical health challenges.
The beneficiaries include:
William Ato Essien was Jailed for his role in the Capital Bank collapse, he failed to fully pay a GHS90 million settlement and was sentenced to 15 years in December 2023. Essien has severe medical conditions requiring ongoing care.
Philip Akpeena Assibit was Sentenced to 12 years in 2018 for financial loss linked to the National Youth Employment Programme, Assibit has served six years and sought release due to poor health.
Akwasi Alhassan was Initially sentenced to death for murder in 1993, his punishment was reduced to life imprisonment after 31 years.
Beatrice Ofori was Convicted of human trafficking in 2023 and sentenced to eight years, Ofori, 64, struggles with hypertension and mobility issues.
Frank Obeng Serving 40 years for manslaughter, his term will be reduced to 12 years.
Stephen Nyarko was Sentenced to 30 years for robbery in 2010, Nyarko has already served 22 years, including remand time.
Osman Inusah Convicted for conspiracy to rob, Inusah suffers from mental health issues requiring family care.
Joseph Nana Kwaku Boateng was Sentenced to 15 years for narcotics offenses in 2019, Boateng has spent eight years in custody.
Emmanuel Adu Mensah Serving 15 years for narcotics possession since April 2024, Mensah remains in Nsawam Prison.
This decision reflects the President’s commitment to addressing health and rehabilitation challenges among inmates.
