Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, the newly elected independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, has disclosed his inclination to align with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
In a Facebook post on January 6, 2025, A Plus revealed that Kennedy Agyapong, the MP for Assin Central from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had approached him to join their side in Parliament. However, he stated that his heart leans towards the NDC, which currently holds a commanding majority in Parliament with 183 seats compared to the NPP’s 88 seats.
Background
Kwame A Plus ran as an independent candidate in the 2024 parliamentary elections, securing 14,277 votes to defeat both the NPP’s candidate, Eyiah Naana (11,637 votes), and the NDC’s Yawson Muhammed Naeem-Deen (10,112 votes).
His victory has made him a key player in Ghana’s Ninth Parliament, as both major political parties seek his support to bolster their influence in the legislative house.
Proposals from the NPP and NDC
A Plus shared that the NPP’s proposal included an agreement not to contest the Gomoa Central seat in the 2028 elections if he aligns with their caucus. On the other hand, the NDC has also made overtures, inviting him for a meeting scheduled for January 7, 2025.
Despite his connections with members of both parties, A Plus emphasized that his decision would ultimately depend on which side offers the best deal for him and his constituents.
A Plus’s Statement
In his post, A Plus clarified his current position:
“Let me make this simple and clear: deep down, my heart leans toward the NDC, but I will ultimately side with whoever has my interest at heart and provides the best offer for me and the people of Gomoa Central. Tomorrow, I may have to disappoint some people, but this decision will be for the greater good.”
Implications
As Parliament prepares to begin its new session, A Plus’s decision could have significant implications for legislative dynamics. With the NDC already holding a near two-thirds majority, securing his support could further solidify their dominance. Conversely, an alliance with the NPP would be a rare victory for the party as it seeks to maintain relevance in the face of a weakened parliamentary presence.
Observers will closely watch A Plus’s next move, as it could shape the balance of power in Ghana’s legislature.
