Today, January 7, 2025, marks a historic day in Ghana’s democratic journey as John Dramani Mahama prepares to be sworn in as the 6th President of the Fourth Republic. This significant event reaffirms Ghana’s position as a beacon of democracy in Africa, celebrated for its peaceful transitions of power and commitment to constitutional governance.

The Significance of the Inauguration

Presidential inaugurations in Ghana are more than ceremonial—they symbolize the will of the people and the nation’s dedication to upholding democratic principles. With each new president, Ghana renews its commitment to national development, unity, and stability. Today’s ceremony, held at the Black Star Square in Accra, will see dignitaries, international representatives, and citizens gather to witness this momentous occasion.

John Dramani Mahama’s swearing-in is particularly significant as it marks his second tenure as President, having previously served from 2012 to 2017. This return to the presidency underscores the dynamism of Ghana’s democratic system, where citizens freely elect their leaders based on trust and vision for the nation.

A Look Back at Ghana’s Fourth Republic

The Fourth Republic of Ghana was ushered in on January 7, 1993, following the adoption of a new constitution in 1992. This period marked a turning point in Ghana’s political history, transitioning from years of military rule to multiparty democracy.

Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, who led the nation as Head of State during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era, became the first President of the Fourth Republic. His inauguration was a defining moment that set the stage for subsequent democratic practices.

Rawlings served two terms, followed by John Agyekum Kufuor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who also completed two terms. Professor John Evans Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) succeeded Kufuor but tragically passed away in office, paving the way for his then-Vice President, John Dramani Mahama, to complete the term and later win his own mandate in 2012.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, also of the NPP, took over in 2017 and served two terms, culminating in today’s return of John Dramani Mahama to the presidency.
