Parliament has officially approved the composition of its Appointments Committee, which is responsible for vetting and recommending nominees for ministerial and other key positions.
The Committee will be chaired by the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, with Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah serving as the Vice Chairperson. Additionally, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has been appointed as the Ranking Member, while Patricia Appiagyei will act as the Deputy Ranking Member.
The Appointments Committee plays a critical role in scrutinizing individuals nominated by the President for appointment as Ministers of State, their Deputies, and other roles specified under the Constitution or relevant legislation.
Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, presented the report on the composition of the Appointments Committee. He emphasized the importance of the approval, stating:
“The committee respectfully recommends to the house to adopt this report and approve the membership of the appointment and business committee as composed, and the recomposition of the committees of selection based on the ratio of 183 to 88. Mister Speaker, I shall submit.”
With Parliament’s approval, the Committee is set to begin its essential mandate of ensuring transparency and accountability in the appointments process.
