Energy Minister-Designate John Jinapor orders ECG to alt all payments

John Jinapor, the Minister-Designate for Energy, has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to immediately suspend all payments to suppliers. This decision, announced on January 9, 2025, seeks to address significant revenue losses and operational inefficiencies within the company.

According to Jinapor, ECG is currently losing over 40% of the power it generates, a stark contrast to the 2-4% losses seen in other countries. He attributed these losses to mismanagement, including the challenge of overseeing more than 70 separate bank accounts. To resolve this, he announced plans to consolidate ECG’s accounts and implement reforms aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery.

The directive was issued with support from the Chief of Staff. Jinapor warned ECG staff, particularly in the finance directorate, of serious consequences should the directive be ignored. He emphasized that the move was necessary to create financial stability for the company and facilitate critical sector reforms.

Jinapor also expressed the need to engage the private sector to enhance ECG’s operations and increase revenue. He revealed plans to collaborate with consultants from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to establish a transparent framework for private sector involvement, especially in billing and collection processes.

This directive highlights the energy ministry’s commitment to addressing inefficiencies in the power sector while ensuring better service delivery to Ghanaians.
