A significant fire broke out at the Techiman Central Market in the Bono East Region on January 12, 2025, destroying numerous shops and properties.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), promptly intervened to contain the blaze and prevent its spread to nearby areas.

This incident adds to a worrying pattern of market fires across Ghana in recent weeks. On January 2, 2025, Accra’s Kantamanto Market, one of the world’s largest hubs for secondhand clothing, suffered a massive fire that destroyed hundreds of stalls, displacing thousands of traders and causing severe economic losses.

The recurring fires have raised alarm among traders, citizens, and authorities about the safety of these essential commercial hubs. Investigations are underway to identify the causes of these fires and develop preventive measures.

Following the Kantamanto Market fire, President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed sorrow and extended support to the affected traders. He assured them of immediate government assistance to mitigate their losses. Additionally, the OR Foundation, a nonprofit working with Kantamanto vendors, pledged $1 million to aid victims and established a fund for further donations.

Authorities are under pressure to expedite investigations and enforce stricter safety measures to protect traders and their livelihoods across Ghana’s markets.
