The government has deployed a joint team of Police and Military personnel to Nkwanta in the Oti Region to restore peace following violent clashes reportedly triggered by a chieftaincy dispute.

Deadly Conflict

The violence, which began on Wednesday, January 15, and persisted into the night of Thursday, January 16, has resulted in the death of three individuals and left several others injured. Reports suggest that sporadic gunfire from unidentified individuals has heightened tension in the community, leaving residents in fear.

Security Measures

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that initial deployments were made on Thursday night to stabilize the situation. Additional reinforcements are expected to arrive today to strengthen security operations and ensure the enforcement of law and order.

“The security personnel are there to ensure calm is restored, and we will take all necessary measures to prevent further escalation,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.

Background and Current Situation

The clashes, believed to stem from long-standing chieftaincy disputes involving local factions, have caused significant property damage and displaced some residents. Videos from the area reveal the extent of the destruction and ongoing hostilities.

While efforts are underway to de-escalate tensions, the situation remains volatile, with intermittent reports of violence and gunfire.

Government Appeal

The government has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel. Authorities are also appealing to the disputing factions to seek peaceful means of resolving their differences to avoid further loss of life and property.

The deployment underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all citizens in the affected area.
