Akufo-Addo-and-Bawumia-1

Dr. Jonathan Asante, a Political Science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, has attributed 60% of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election to the leadership style and governance of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Neglect of Party Structures

Speaking to Citi News, Dr. Asante criticized the administration for neglecting party structures and centralizing power, which he described as a “one-man show.” This, he argued, weakened the party’s internal organization and eroded grassroots support.

“What happened to them is like what is in Jeremiah, where it is said that the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children’s teeth are set on edge. I think Mr. Akufo-Addo contributed about 60 percent of Dr. Bawumia’s defeat, and Dr. Bawumia himself contributed about 40 percent,” Dr. Asante noted.

Arrogance and Poor Governance

Dr. Asante highlighted the arrogance displayed by government appointees as another key factor in the NPP’s electoral loss. He argued that these behaviors alienated the electorate and created widespread dissatisfaction.

“Arrogance from appointees and a failure to address the needs of the people contributed to mass opposition to the renewal of their mandate in the 2024 elections. The goodwill was simply not there.”

Sammy Crabbe’s Remarks

Dr. Asante’s comments echo recent statements by Sammy Crabbe, a former Vice Chairman of the NPP, who described the party as weak following its electoral defeat.

Future of the NDC

Looking ahead, Dr. Asante emphasized that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) must capitalize on its victory by delivering on its promises under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama. According to him, the NDC’s electoral fortunes will depend heavily on the performance of the current administration.

“The NDC must ensure that their promises are fulfilled and that they govern effectively. Otherwise, they risk losing the goodwill they currently enjoy,” he cautioned.

The NPP’s defeat, as analyzed by Dr. Asante, underscores the importance of strong party structures, humility in governance, and consistent engagement with the electorate. The party now faces the challenge of rebuilding its image and addressing the factors that led to its electoral loss.
