The Minority in Parliament has issued a stern warning to withdraw its cooperation in legislative activities if President John Dramani Mahama fails to address escalating violence and lawlessness following the 2024 general elections.
The Minority claims the unrest, allegedly instigated by individuals affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), aims to disrupt the Electoral Commission’s declaration of the Ablekuma North Parliamentary election results, which are expected to favor the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking at a press briefing, the Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, called on President Mahama and the Election Security Taskforce to act swiftly to restore order and protect citizens.
“To President Mahama, we call on you to take immediate steps to call your party’s thugs to order. You cannot pretend to be unaware of all the lawlessness and violence in this country,” Shaib said.
He also urged the Ghana Police Service, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Election Security Taskforce to ensure the safety of Electoral Commission officials and other stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
Shaib emphasized the Minority’s commitment to peaceful protests if necessary and warned of their intention to disrupt parliamentary collaboration if the situation persists.
“We hereby serve notice that should the President, who is the Commander-in-Chief, fail to take steps to protect ordinary citizens, we, the Minority Caucus, shall protest through lawful means and withdraw our cooperation in Parliament.”
The call underscores growing tensions surrounding the Ablekuma North election and highlights the potential impact of unresolved electoral disputes on parliamentary proceedings and national stability.
