Ghanaians have reacted strongly to Karen Baaba Sam’s revelation of alleged domestic violence by her ex-partner, Nana Kwadwo Adjei, a prominent businessman. In an interview with Asaase News, Karen detailed the abuse she endured between 2016 and 2020 while living with Adjei and their daughter. She said the abuse forced her to move out and seek safety.

On social media, many praised Karen’s bravery in speaking out. Ayinipobila Azas, sharing her own experience, described domestic violence as devastating and urged society to do better in supporting survivors and holding perpetrators accountable.

Media personality Bridget Otoo criticized societal blame on women for staying in abusive relationships, highlighting the complexity of leaving such situations. Others, like actress Lydia Forson, expressed shock and called for change, while some, including Camry Tagoe, advocated harsh consequences for abusers.

Karen’s account revealed years of physical, verbal, and emotional abuse. The violence began in 2018 during her pregnancy and escalated over the years. Despite reporting the abuse, police took no action, as Adjei allegedly boasted about his influence over law enforcement.

Karen’s breaking point came in 2023 after a public humiliation and another assault. She left the relationship in December 2023 and moved out in February 2024.

Shortly after moving, Karen was robbed at gunpoint, losing her valuables, though she suspected Adjei’s involvement as a specific necklace he wanted was left untouched. Police protection was later assigned to her.

In a related development, a police warrant issued on January 20, 2025, declared Karen wanted for “unlawful child removal.” The warrant described her in detail, sparking public outrage. Lawyer Seth Doe criticized the police’s handling of the case, while social media user Aku Addy condemned the inclusion of Karen’s tattoo as an identifier in the warrant, calling it disrespectful.

Karen’s story has reignited conversations about domestic violence and the systemic failures that often protect abusers. Many have called for reforms to ensure survivors receive justice and support.
