A fire incident at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi on Friday, January 24, 2025, was quickly brought under control, thanks to the swift and tactical response by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The fire, which affected two shops—S-1785 and S-1786—on the second floor of the market, was reported at 5:27 a.m.
The GNFS arrived at the scene just six minutes after receiving the distress call, initiating firefighting efforts promptly. By 5:47 a.m., the team had successfully contained the fire, and by 5:58 a.m., it was fully extinguished.
This timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the market, a vital commercial hub in the Ashanti Region.
Out of the 25 shops near the blaze, 23 were salvaged through the GNFS’s efficient and coordinated actions. The firefighting team utilized two 5kg carbon dioxide (CO₂) extinguishers, 26 six-kilogram dry chemical powder extinguishers, and water supplied through a hose reel to combat the fire effectively.
No injuries or fatalities were recorded during the incident, a testament to the professionalism of the GNFS team and the ongoing intensified patrols in the area. However, the affected shops sustained varying degrees of damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the GNFS, with updates expected as inquiries progress.
This incident underscores the importance of having well-trained fire personnel and adequate firefighting equipment in high-risk commercial areas such as Kejetia Market.
The GNFS’s rapid response and tactical efforts not only minimized property damage but also demonstrated their commitment to safeguarding lives and businesses in the region.
The Public Relations Office of the GNFS in the Ashanti Region commended the firefighting team for their dedication and urged the public to adhere to fire safety protocols to prevent future occurrences.
Shop owners and traders in the market were also encouraged to equip their premises with functional fire extinguishers and ensure proper electrical maintenance to reduce fire risks.
The Kejetia Market fire serves as a reminder of the critical role of the GNFS in protecting public spaces and mitigating disasters in Ghana’s bustling commercial hubs.
