The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to investigate allegations of illegal mining involving the Member of Parliament for Aowin, Oscar Larbi.

In a letter dated January 30 and addressed to the Jubilee House, the coalition—comprising media organizations, labour unions, faith-based groups, and traditional authorities—called for urgent action to address the issue.

The allegations focus on illegal mining activities within the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region. According to local traditional authorities, Oscar Larbi is accused of facilitating the entry of illegal miners, whose operations have led to severe environmental degradation, including the destruction of vegetation and significant forest loss.

The coalition is urging President Mahama to commission an independent investigation involving key agencies such as the Ghana Police Service, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Minerals Commission to determine the extent of the destruction and hold those responsible accountable.

Additionally, the group is calling for swift action against any Member of Parliament or government official found to be involved in illegal mining activities.

Beyond the petition to the President, the coalition has also reached out to the Speaker of Parliament and the Inspector General of Police, emphasizing that addressing these allegations is crucial to restoring public confidence in the government’s fight against illegal mining.
