The Minority in Parliament is calling for the removal of Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor from his position as Majority Chief Whip, citing concerns over his leadership style and alleged disruptive conduct.

During a press conference on Friday, January 31, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused Dafeamekpor of undermining parliamentary cohesion and interfering with the work of Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Appointments Committee.

“To my respected friend Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, if he thinks he is still in opposition and would be a bully, then he will meet his match. Dafeamekpor has gained notoriety for shouting, yelling, undermining his own chairman, interrupting proceedings, and even challenging his own Majority Leader, yet he calls himself the avant-garde of the government,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

Call for Reconsideration

The Minority argues that the role of Majority Chief Whip requires diplomacy and negotiation, rather than aggression. Afenyo-Markin urged President John Mahama and his administration to reconsider their choice of Dafeamekpor, suggesting that his confrontational approach is affecting parliamentary proceedings.

“The Majority Chief Whip’s role is to be a key negotiator, a diplomat in the Chamber. If he managed to be disruptive in opposition, now he is in government, and that must change. President Mahama and his government may have to rethink their choice of Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor as their Majority Chief Whip,” he added.

The call for Dafeamekpor’s removal comes amid heightened tensions in Parliament following recent clashes during ministerial vetting sessions. The Majority side is yet to officially respond to the Minority’s demands.
