PNAfrica condemns chaos at vetting Committee, urges Speaker to take action

The Parliamentary Network Africa (PNAfrica) has strongly condemned the chaotic scenes that erupted during the vetting of the President’s ministerial nominees in Parliament on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

In a statement issued on Friday, the parliamentary advocacy group described the conduct of Members of Parliament (MPs) as shameful and dishonorable, expressing disappointment over the physical altercations and heckling that marred proceedings at the Appointments Committee.

“The Parliamentary Network Africa (PNAfrica) unequivocally condemns the shameful and dishonorable conduct displayed by Members of Parliament at the Appointments Committee during the vetting of the President’s ministerial nominees in Parliament on Thursday, January 30, 2025”.

“As an organization committed to promoting parliamentary transparency, accountability, and decorum, we are deeply disappointed by the shocking scenes of physical altercations and heckling among lawmakers. Such actions not only bring Parliament into disrepute but also erode public confidence in the institution’s ability to conduct its affairs with integrity and professionalism”.

The incident, which saw heated confrontations between Minority and Majority MPs, has reignited concerns over the growing trend of disorderly conduct in Parliament.

PNAfrica noted that this is not the first time such incidents have occurred, recalling similar disturbances during the election of the Speaker of the 8th Parliament and on other occasions.

“Much as PNAfrica petitioned Parliament for the situation to be addressed to forestall its recurrence, nothing was done, and our petition never saw the light of day,” the statement read.

The organization is now urging the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to take swift and decisive action against those responsible for the disruptions.

“We, therefore, call on the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin— who has been widely acknowledged for his legislative experience and leadership—to take swift [ and decisive action. Those responsible for the chaos must be held accountable to ensure that such incidents do not recur and that parliamentary proceedings maintain the dignity they deserve”.

The events at the vetting committee have sparked widespread public debate, with many questioning whether Ghana’s legislature is doing enough to uphold decorum and respect in its proceedings.
