Alban-Bagbin

The Ghana Parliamentary Monitoring Organizations Network (GPMON) has praised Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin for his swift and decisive action following the misconduct witnessed during the ministerial vetting session on January 30, 2025.

In a press statement released on Monday, February 3, 2025, GPMON lauded Speaker Bagbin’s commitment to upholding parliamentary integrity by launching an investigation into the chaotic incident. The group emphasized that such a move was necessary to maintain discipline and order within the legislative chamber.

Call for Accountability and Discipline

GPMON acknowledged the Speaker’s dedication to strictly enforcing Parliament’s Standing Orders, stressing that adherence to these rules is crucial for preserving the dignity of the House and restoring public trust in Ghana’s democracy.

“As civil society organizations committed to promoting parliamentary transparency and accountability, we express our keen interest in the outcome of the investigation and subsequent actions taken,” the statement read. The network also urged that stronger sanctions be imposed on MPs found guilty of misconduct, including financial penalties to cover damages caused during the altercation.

Civil Society’s Role in Strengthening Parliament

The organizations affirmed their commitment to monitoring the proceedings of the seven-member committee established by the Speaker to probe the matter. They also pledged to track directives given to the Clerk to Parliament and updates from the Ghana Police Service, which is conducting its own investigations.

GPMON believes that the Speaker’s decisive actions set a precedent for maintaining discipline in Parliament and ensuring that elected representatives conduct themselves in a manner befitting their offices.
