Security has been significantly tightened in Ghana’s Parliament to enforce the suspension of four lawmakers ahead of Tuesday’s sitting. The four MPs, suspended by Speaker Alban Bagbin for two weeks, were involved in violent confrontations during the vetting of ministerial nominees at the Appointments Committee on January 30, 2025.

Ahead of the 12-noon parliamentary session, a heavy police presence has been deployed within the precincts of Parliament, with barricades mounted at strategic entry points to ensure compliance with the Speaker’s directive.

The decision to suspend the MPs has been met with resistance from the Minority Caucus, which continues to protest the move. However, parliamentary leadership insists that maintaining order and discipline is crucial for the integrity of legislative proceedings.

The heightened security measures come amidst ongoing investigations by a seven-member committee set up by Speaker Bagbin to probe the disturbances. The committee is expected to submit its findings within ten days.

This development signals Parliament’s commitment to upholding decorum and enforcing its Standing Orders, as tensions remain high over recent disruptions in the legislative process.
