The Minority in Parliament has raised objections to Dr. Johnson Asiamah assuming official duties as Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) before receiving formal approval from the Council of State.

President John Dramani Mahama nominated Dr. Asiamah on January 31, 2025, following a request by the outgoing Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, to proceed on leave ahead of his retirement on March 31. Dr. Addison, who has served as Governor since April 2017, is set to complete his tenure after two full terms.

However, in a letter addressed to President Mahama on February 4, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin argued that Dr. Asiamah’s immediate assumption of office is unconstitutional, citing the absence of the Council of State, which is yet to be constituted.

“It is my considered view that Dr. Johnson Asiamah should refrain from engaging in official duties at the Bank of Ghana until his nomination has been duly approved by the Council of State. While awaiting confirmation, he can seek any necessary briefings outside the formal assumption of office,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He further urged the President to address the issue to maintain the integrity of Ghana’s institutional processes.

The controversy adds to the growing political tensions over key government appointments, with the Minority insisting that due process must be followed in all transitions of power.
