NUGS Threatens Nationwide Protests Over Withheld WASSCE Results

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has issued a one-week ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release all withheld 2024 WASSCE results or face mass protests across the country.

At a press briefing, NUGS President Daniel Korley expressed outrage over WAEC’s handling of the issue, accusing the council of unjustly withholding results without granting affected students a fair hearing. The union is also calling for the immediate removal of WAEC Ghana’s Head, citing unfair treatment of students accused of examination malpractice.

NUGS claims that WAEC’s delays in releasing results have prevented some students from securing university placements, as many public institutions have already closed their admission processes. The union also criticized WAEC’s policy of canceling entire results for students found guilty of malpractice in just one subject, arguing that only the affected paper should be annulled.

The students’ body further demanded the introduction of a proper appeal system to allow candidates to challenge WAEC’s decisions. According to NUGS, these concerns were formally addressed in a letter to WAEC on January 2, 2025, but the council has yet to provide a satisfactory response.

“If WAEC fails to act, we will escalate this matter through legal and advocacy channels, including seeking judicial intervention,” Korley warned.

He urged students to remain calm but firm in demanding their rights, stressing that NUGS will not rest until justice is served and the credibility of WAEC is restored.
