The current composition of Parliament is a clear mandate given by the people of Ghana to President John Mahama and the NDC to implement NDC’s manifesto, and execute the business of government with or without the cooperation of the NPP, especially, if NPP’s minority shall be disruptive, and not allow the government of John Mahama to accomplish the aspirations of Ghanaians.

It is extremely important for the majority leadership in Parliament including the leadership of all committees of Parliament to understand this mandate clearly to mean that the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians do not want to see President Mahama’s government including the super-majority in Parliament beg, or act in anyway to appease the NPP side in executing the business of government.

So, whereas all of us accept that cooperation and the building of concensus with NPP’s minority is the best way forward in practicing effective democracy, it is also necessary to recognize that the mandate of the government emanated from the people of Ghana, who want to see a bold and decisive government, which shall understand its true authority and act with it to meet the aspirations of the Ghanaian people.

It is therefore the expectation of Ghanaians that the government, including Parliament shall enjoy the full mandate given to it by the people of Ghana by asserting its authority emphatically without fear or favour. The people are comfortable with reasonable efforts only to accommodate the opposition NPP, but certainly, not to over-indulge them and end up giving the impression that government business cannot be accomplished without the input of the micro-minority NPP.

Since it is now clear to all that the NPP minority does not intend to employ the conventional parliamentary methods of resistance, which include succumbing to, abandoning of, or walking out from, proceedings, but they rather choose to stay in the house to fight, and disrupt proceedings, which shall obviously result in violence all the time, it is evident that their clear intent is to always instigate violence in Parliament, and they must be called out very loudly by all well meaning Ghanaians. This is the only way to ensure that we do not see more violence in this 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The Micro-Minority NPP cannot be allowed to have their way anyhow. We hope this shall reflect in the ‘Bedzrah Committee’ established by the Speaker of Parliament to investigate the first violence of this Parliament.

Thank you for reading.
