Sam George Secures Ministerial Approval as Minority Abstains

Sam George has been officially approved as Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovations following a majority consensus in Parliament. The approval process, however, was marked by controversy, as the Minority opted to abstain from the decision.

Initially, the Minority had intended to demand a secret ballot, raising concerns over George’s past remarks and conduct during his vetting session. However, after consultations and appeals from respected figures within the House, they chose to step back from the approval process.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin explained that the decision to abstain was influenced by calls for restraint, as they sought to avoid further parliamentary tensions.

“Given the appeals and the need to maintain order in the House, we chose not to escalate matters further. While we maintain our concerns, we have allowed the process to proceed without our participation,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

Other Ministerial Approvals

Alongside Sam George, Parliament also approved the nominations of Rashid Pelpuo, Kofi Adams, Joseph Nikpe, and Murtala Ibrahim for various ministerial portfolios. Their confirmation followed extensive debates and a thorough vetting process.

The newly approved ministers and their respective roles are:

  • Rashid Pelpuo – Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment:
Pelpuo, a seasoned politician and former MP for Wa Central, is expected to lead initiatives aimed at job creation, improving labour conditions, and tackling unemployment.
  • Kofi Adams – Minister for Sports and Recreation:
A former National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Adams brings extensive political and administrative experience to the role. His mandate includes revitalizing the sports sector and promoting recreational activities nationwide.
  • Joseph Nikpe – Minister for Transport:
Nikpe will be responsible for addressing critical challenges in the transportation sector, focusing on infrastructure development and improving public transit systems.
  • Murtala Ibrahim – Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology:
Ibrahim is tasked with overseeing policies on environmental conservation, scientific research, and technological innovation to drive national development.

What’s Next?

The newly confirmed ministers are expected to be sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days, after which they will formally assume their respective roles.

Their approval marks a significant step in shaping the administration’s governance agenda, with expectations high for them to deliver on key national priorities.

However, the Minority’s abstention from Sam George’s approval raises questions about future parliamentary dynamics, especially as more appointments come up for vetting in the weeks ahead.
