Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced plans to reintroduce road and bridge tolls as part of efforts to generate revenue for road maintenance and related projects.

In a statement issued on February 6, 2025, the Ministry assured the public that the new toll system would be modernized and technologically driven to enhance efficiency and transparency.

“To achieve this objective, the Ministry will employ an open, transparent, competitive, cost-effective, and fair procurement process,” said Nasir Ahmad Yartey, Head of the Public Relations Unit.

The reintroduction of tolls comes after the government scrapped them in 2021, citing inefficiencies and traffic congestion. However, the Ministry now believes a modernized system will address past challenges and provide a sustainable funding source for road maintenance.

“The Ministry wishes to assure the public of commitment to introducing a modernized system that addresses the current tolling and road maintenance funding challenges of the country,” it added.
