The African Continental Union Consult (ACUC), a think tank committed to African good governance, grassroots empowerment, and the sovereign ownership of African resources, stands in solemn solidarity with the people of Namibia in this moment of profound loss.
Yet, as Africa mourns, she also stands tall—for a mighty son has completed his mission. Sam Nujoma, the indomitable warrior of Namibia’s liberation, now takes his place among the immortals.
His transition comes at a historic moment—a time when Namibia, the nation he liberated, witnesses the ascension of its first elected female President, H.E. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. The heroic funeral of Namibia’s founding President shall unfold under her leadership, an occasion of immense significance, where Africa shall witness the valor and strength of women in leadership.
Comrade Sam Nujoma, your spirit, forged in the crucible of struggle, shall never fade. From the battlefields of Ovamboland to the rise of SWAPO, your revolutionary fervor shattered the chains of oppression and heralded a new dawn for Namibia. No force of colonial subjugation, no storm of apartheid tyranny, could extinguish your resolve.
You stood unwavering at the vanguard, leading the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), the military wing of SWAPO, in a relentless guerrilla campaign against the South African Defense Force. PLAN became the unyielding spearhead of resistance, striking fear into the heart of imperialism and paving the way for Namibia’s independence in 1990.
You were the last of Africa’s great liberation warriors, the final sentinel who stood watch as the sun rose over a free Namibia.
In your presence, Commandante Fidel Castro, another colossus of revolution, declared at the Namibian School in Cuba that the Isles of Youth would become the Isles of Youth of the OAU. That prophetic vision remains an unbroken pledge—a call to arms for all Cuban-trained revolutionaries, who now carry forward the eternal flame of African dignity, self-determination, and economic sovereignty.
The blood of Kassinga still cries from the soil, yet its anguish is met with the triumph of independence you secured. Namibia, once shackled, now walks proudly among free nations, yet the struggle continues—to dismantle the lingering specters of apartheid and neo-colonialism.
You gave your life to the cause, and in so doing, you ascended beyond mortality.
As José Martà proclaimed:
“Death is not true when the work of humanity has been fulfilled.”
Comrade Sam Nujoma, your name is inscribed in the sacred annals of history, your deeds engraved in the hearts of the oppressed who dared to rise. You do not die, for the struggle marches on. Every conscious, progressive African breathes in the air of liberty you fought for and stands renewed in their resolve to defend it.
In the Pan-African Spiritual Vineyard of Vencidos, you now walk among Africa’s eternal victors:
Harriet Tubman, Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, Winnie Mandela, Thomas Sankara, Modibo Keita, Fidel Castro, Samora Machel, AmÃlcar Cabral, Robert Sobukwe, Nelson Mandela, Agostinho Neto, Robert Mugabe, Antonio Maceo, Julius Nyerere, Kenneth Kaunda, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Malcolm X, Maurice Bishop, Che Guevara—the pantheon of revolutionaries who, in their might, fought for Africa’s total redemption.
Long Live the Memory of Sam Nujoma!
Long Live the Undying Spirit of African Liberation!
Viva Namibia! Viva Africa!
