Hon. Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, MP for Bosome Freho in the Ashanti Region, has called on Journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism as Ghana joins the World to mark World Radio Day.

The MP who was speaking on the commemoration of World Radio Day acknowledged the significant roles radio plays in national cohesion and in fostering unity.

The Bosome Freho lawmaker disclosed that since 2012, the world has set aside the 13th of February to celebrate the contributions of radio.

“Mr. Speaker since 1935 when radio was set up in Ghana to serve as a liaison between the Crown and the Colony radio has served a wide role in shaping our national history. From serving in our struggle for independence, as a voice for coup plotters and above all as a beacon of democracy ”

He talked about the criminal libel law, which was been used to silence journalists from doing their jobs, and the fact that it took the NPP government to repeal it under President Kufour. President Akufo Addo then was the Attorney General.

He bemoaned the fact that such a powerful tool is being used by some journalists to spread hate speech, propaganda, and deliberate misinformation on critical matters of the state.

Mr. Speaker, we must not allow radio to be used to incite violence, undermine national cohesion, and erode the trust in our democratic institutions, he added.

I therefore call on our journalists for whose sake the criminal libel and sedition laws were repealed to uphold the highest form of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
