Ghana marks its 68th Independence Day today, March 6, 2025, under the theme “Reflect, Review, and Reset.” In a departure from tradition, the celebration has been relocated from the Black Star Square to the Jubilee House, the seat of government, as part of cost-saving measures amidst current economic challenges.

President John Dramani Mahama directed this change to reduce government expenditure, suspending the rotational hosting of the event in regional capitals—a practice that previously incurred significant costs. For instance, last year’s celebration in Ho cost the nation approximately 15 million Ghana cedis.

This year’s modest ceremony will feature a military guard of honor, cultural performances by basic school pupils, and a poetry recital by a senior high school student. The event will be attended by chiefs, religious leaders, students, traders, and political party representatives. The President’s ceremonial address will underscore the significance of the day and provide an opportunity for national reflection.

The theme “Reflect, Review, and Reset” resonates with the national mood, encouraging citizens to contemplate the country’s journey, assess current challenges, and strategize for a renewed future. Despite the scaled-down festivities, the essence of national pride and unity remains central to the commemoration.
