Kissi-Agyebeng-and-Ken-Ofori-Atta

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has cautioned former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta that he will be re-listed as a wanted person if he fails to appear for questioning on June 2, 2025.

This follows an earlier decision by the OSP to declare Ofori-Atta a fugitive over corruption-related investigations.

However, after he requested the removal of his name from the wanted list and assured authorities he would present himself for questioning, the OSP granted his request in good faith.

In a statement, the OSP stressed that Ofori-Atta is “mandatorily required” to appear in person. Failure to do so will lead to his reclassification as a fugitive, with an Interpol Red Notice issued for his arrest and possible extradition. The OSP reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law, stating that Ofori-Atta remains the prime suspect in five corruption-related investigations.

Background

Ken Ofori-Atta, who served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 to 2023, was a key figure in the country’s economic management, overseeing policies such as the controversial Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) and negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). His tenure faced criticism over rising debt levels, economic hardships, and allegations of conflict of interest.

Earlier this year, the OSP accused him of corruption and financial misconduct, leading to the initial declaration that he was a fugitive. Ofori-Atta, however, denied the allegations, arguing that he had cooperated with the investigation through his lawyers.

Now, he has taken legal action against the OSP, seeking a court injunction to prevent further public declarations against him. He claims the accusations have damaged his reputation and wants the court to intervene.

As the June 2 deadline nears, attention remains on whether Ofori-Atta will comply or face legal consequences, including extradition efforts.
