
President John Mahama has appointed new Acting Service Chiefs for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in an effort to strengthen military leadership and enhance national security.

The appointments, which take effect on March 24, 2025, are part of a broader restructuring aimed at improving military efficiency and operational readiness.
The newly appointed acting service Chiefs:
Chief of the Defence Staff: Brigadier General William Agyapong
Chief of Army Staff: Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu
Chief of Naval Staff: Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing
Chief of Air Staff: Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong
Chief of Staff: Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan
These appointments remain subject to consultation with the Council of State, as mandated by law.
During a meeting at the Flagstaff House, President Mahama commended the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by Chief of the Defence Staff General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, for their dedication and contributions to national security.
In a statement by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, highlighted the President’s gratitude to the departing officers and his commitment to leveraging their experience for national development.
The reshuffle is expected to reinforce Ghana’s military capabilities and ensure the armed forces remain well-equipped to handle emerging security challenges.
