GJA commends Police for arrest, prosecution of Ahmed Suale murder suspect

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has applauded the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and prosecution of Daniel Owusu Koranteng, a suspect in the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on March 19, 2025, and remanded into police custody until April 1, 2025.

In a statement, GJA General Secretary Kofi Yeboah praised the police, particularly Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and CID Director-General DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for taking a giant step toward justice.

“We note that more than six years after the assassination of Ahmed Suale on January 16, 2019, this is the first time the Police have made a significant impact in respect of bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice,” the statement noted.

While welcoming the arrest, the GJA urged law enforcement to pursue other suspects involved in the killing, emphasizing that the fight for justice is not over.

The association also reaffirmed its commitment to holding authorities accountable, recalling its ultimatum to take the case to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if no concrete action was taken by the end of March 2025.

Additionally, the GJA has informed international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), both of which have expressed interest in escalating the case to global platforms.

The police investigation into Suale’s murder has been a major concern for press freedom advocates, with Ghana’s World Press Freedom Index suffering due to the lack of progress. The GJA vowed to continue monitoring developments and demand justice for journalists affected by violence.
