The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has sworn in a 25-member Council of Elders to help resolve internal party disputes and spearhead efforts to rebuild the party.

The newly inaugurated council is expected to play a crucial role in fostering unity, strengthening party structures, and repositioning the CPP as a formidable political force.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has struggled with internal disputes in recent years, affecting its stability and electoral prospects. Tensions heightened in late 2023 when key party officials resigned, prompting a group to attempt the formation of an interim council to steer the party.

However, this led to legal battles, with the Accra High Court ruling in favor of Nana Akosua Sarpong-Kumankumah as the rightful chairperson, affirming that only the party’s central committee had the authority to govern its affairs.

Speaking to the media after the swearing-in ceremony, CPP’s 2024 flagbearer, Nana Akosua Sarpong-Kumankumah, expressed confidence in the new council, describing it as a crucial step towards revitalizing the party.

She acknowledged the party’s long-standing challenges but stressed that with the wisdom and leadership of the elders, the CPP could overcome its difficulties and become a formidable political force once again.

According to her, the council will not only serve as a stabilizing body but also play a key role in formulating strategies that will enhance the party’s chances of winning power in the upcoming elections.

She further emphasized the importance of internal cohesion, stating that for the CPP to be a viable alternative to the dominant political parties in Ghana, it must first resolve its internal struggles.

She urged all party members to support the council’s efforts and work together towards a common goal.

With this development, the CPP hopes to put an end to its history of internal wrangling and focus on strengthening its structures, mobilizing grassroots support, and presenting a compelling vision to Ghanaians ahead of the December 2024 polls.
