A devastating fire that broke out at Adum PZ in Kumasi early Friday morning has been largely extinguished after an extensive firefighting operation involving multiple agencies.

The fire, which started around 5:30 a.m. on March 21, 2025, was reported to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) at 6:05 a.m. Firefighters from the Regional Headquarters at Atonsu-Chirapatre arrived within 10 minutes, but efforts to contain the blaze were initially hindered as fire tenders from Kumasi Metro and Komfo Anokye Fire Stations were undergoing repairs.
Faced with a rapidly spreading inferno, additional fire engines were dispatched from KNUST, Ejisu, and Twedie. A turntable ladder from the Regional Headquarters was also deployed to combat the flames in high-rise structures.
Water tankers from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and a private contractor provided additional support, while personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Army assisted in operations.
The fire was brought under control by 11:45 a.m., though firefighters remained on-site with three fire engines to douse lingering flames and cool affected structures completely. The four-story building where the fire started has been fully extinguished, but nearby structures continue to smolder.
Challenges during the operation included the presence of mixed cargo, which fueled multiple explosions, as well as accessibility issues due to closely packed buildings. Strong winds also contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Two firefighters and one civilian sustained injuries but have since been treated and discharged. The GNFS has recommended the demolition of affected buildings due to structural instability.
Several shops and goods worth millions of cedis were destroyed in the blaze. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
The GNFS has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and urged the public to adhere to fire safety measures to prevent future incidents.
