Ghana commemorated World Water Day with a clarion call for collective action to protect the nation’s water resources.

The event, held in Accra, was organized by the Ministry of Works, Housing, and Water Resources in collaboration with Ghana Water Limited and the Water Resources Commission. This year’s theme, “Water Conservation: Let’s Make It Our Way of Life,” underscored the urgency of adopting sustainable practices to preserve water bodies across the country.
Madam Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, the Deputy Minister of Works, Housing, and Water Resources, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing that safeguarding water resources is a shared responsibility.
She highlighted the critical role water plays in daily life and the economy, urging every citizen to contribute to conservation efforts.
“The conservation of water resources is not the responsibility of just a few people but all citizens since water is a common resource,” Madam Tetteh-Agbotui stated.
She called for intensified commitment and awareness to reverse the deterioration of the country’s water bodies, noting that individual efforts collectively make a significant impact.
The Deputy Minister also addressed the challenges posed by illegal mining activities, known locally as “galamsey,” which have led to significant pollution and degradation of water bodies.
She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing strict regulations against such practices to ensure the sustainability of water resources.
Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, echoed the Deputy Minister’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for investment in innovative solutions, equitable distribution systems, and sustainable infrastructure.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade water treatment facilities and adopt modern technologies to reduce water loss and improve efficiency.
The event also featured discussions on the impact of illegal mining on rivers and streams, with civil society organizations calling for decisive action against such activities to protect water sources.
World Water Day serves as a reminder of the essential role water plays in sustaining life and the environment. The collective efforts of government, stakeholders, and citizens are crucial in ensuring that Ghana’s water resources are preserved for current and future generations.
