An Accra-based Gender Violence Court has remanded 29-year-old Nii Baah Afful into police custody for allegedly assaulting his partner, Francisca Aryee, who was carrying their eight-month-old baby during the attack.

The suspect is to remain in custody for two weeks and is expected to reappear in court on April 9, 2025.

Afful, a fisherman, was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command after a disturbing video of the assault went viral.

The incident, which occurred on March 20 at Korle Gonno, reportedly stemmed from a domestic dispute between the couple.

According to police investigations, the victim had attempted to leave their home for her mother’s house when the suspect pursued and physically attacked her.

Following public outrage, the Police Intelligence Unit tracked down and arrested Afful on March 22. Authorities have since located and identified the victim, ensuring she receives the necessary medical attention and psychological support.

The police have assured the public of their commitment to justice, emphasizing that such acts of domestic violence will not be tolerated.

“The swift action taken by the Accra Regional Police Command demonstrates its commitment to ensuring justice and safety for all citizens,” said Supt. Juliana Obeng of the Public Affairs Directorate.
